Leading Kirtan

Kirtan Committee Goals & Non-Goals

A list of goals and non-goals for the SRF Encinitas Temple Kirtan Commitee

Primary Goals
  • Facilitate group chanting of Cosmic Chants and SRF Bhajans to awaken devotion and interiorize the consciousness for deep meditation

  • Familiarize with and embody chanting principles taught by Guruji and SRF (including accurate melodies, rhythms, blend, effective use of tempo, dynamics, harmonies/drones/tapping)

  • Provide effective accompaniment for commemorative services, long meditations, and other select services/events where kirtan is requested

  • Maintain the purity and accuracy of Guruji's chanting techniques and be a positive example that other Temples and Centers can follow

  • Embody a spirit of development through committee members' individual efforts at improvement as well as group rehearsals, training opportunities, and culture of regular feedback

  • Develop attitude of service and harmony by honoring the organizational structure and taking direction, commensurate with a deep sense of responsibility of representing Guruji's work to the public

  • Ensure effective chant leaders are scheduled to lead high visibility kirtans

Lesser Priority Goals
  • Occasionally introduce new approved chants & variations to the congregation

  • Occasionally add instruments to kirtan repertoire to enhance sonic textures

Non-Goals

(Note: some of these are worthy goals but are better pursued personally / informally as they aren't goals for official SRF kirtan activities)

  • Expand the boundaries of the chant repertoire beyond the Cosmic Chants and SRF Bhajans

  • Provide opportunities for all members who want to express their chanting/instrument styles in front of the Temple membership

  • Contribute to being seen as a "chanting artist" through considering kirtan leading at SRF as a "gig" or credential toward promoting other kirtan gigs

  • Personally advertising one's kirtan sessions at Encinitas Temple

  • Promoting individual styles, creative approaches, eccentricities

  • Lead kirtans in which an individuals' personality is strongly felt as opposed to "getting out of the way" for God and Guru to flow through

  • Over-emotionalism, performance-affectation, preaching-affectation

  • Provide an outlet for socializing and jamming for devotees with passion for music

  • Developing and sharing one's own chant compositions or creative use of the chant medium (e.g. setting an affirmation to music, or using lyrics variations within Cosmic Chants)

  • Doing things only because "we've been doing it that way" (better to evolve positively toward ever-increasing expression of Guruji's ideals for chanting)

  • Distribute kirtan leading and playing opportunities equally among all interested participants

Additional Principles / Notes
  • Willingness to take feedback is a requirement for serving in roles that involve presenting Guruji's teachings to the public, such as kirtan

  • In music one gets to a point of being able to accept feedback and take it impersonally/dispassionately so it's not felt as a personal affront

  • Keep in mind the different spheres of expression: home alone, informally in groups of friends, performances outside of SRF, it is different from playing in the temples where we are representing Guruji's teachings
